birgen_reportIn January of 2009, the BIRGEN project held a seminar entitled "Árbevirolaš máhttu ja oahpaheapmi boazoealáhusas/Tradisjonell kunnskap og opplæring i reindriften" (Traditional knowledge and education in reindeer husbandry). The final report from this seminar, which marked the beginning of the BIRGEN project has been published.

The seminar  entitled 'Are Women Needed in Reindeer Husbandry was held in Alta, Norway in early March. With over a hundred participants it was a great success. Organised by the Reindeer Herding Women's Network and the  BIRGEN project, you can view some photos from the seminar here on the Reindeer Portal.

oassevaldit The (provocatively titled) seminar "Lea go boazoealáhusas dárbu nissonolbmuide?" (Is there a need for women in reindeer husbandry?) organised by the BIRGEN project and the Women's Reindeer Husbandry Network was held in Alta, Norway between the 5-7 March. With nearly 100 participants the seminar was a great success. The BIRGEN project is coordinated by International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry employee Karen Inga Kemi who will be reporting on the seminar in full detail on the BIRGEN website, here on the Reindeer Portal.
 
ICR Board Meeting St Petersburg - See Photos

boardmeeting_thumb The board of the International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry had its last board meeting in its present cycle in St Petersburg recently. The Centre also held a personnel seminar at the same time for members of staff. Besides the meeting, staff and board members took the opportunity to meet with Galina Makarova, the Permanent representative to the embassy of the Republic of Sakha Yakutia in St. Petersburg. Following this fruitful meeting, staff and board members visited the embassy of the Yamal Nenets Autonomous Okrug where they met with the Permanent Representative Elena Sakharova. Finally, a half day was spent visiting the renowned Department of Northern Peoples of the Hertsen Institute. This has been a significant institution for indigenous peoples in Russia  for hundreds of years. For centuries, the institute has focussed on the teaching and training of teachers of northern languages. The Institute has also published an enormous amount of literature in northern languages.

ICR staff and board members met with students and staff and were given a tour of the facility. Present at the meetings were Chair Johan Mathis Turi, board members Juha Magga, Monica A. Sundset, Berit M. Jonsson, Inger A. Smuk, Per Gustav Idivuoma and Mikhail Pogodaev. Staff members present included Elna Sara, Isak Henrik Eira, Karen Inga Kemi and Philip Burgess. The head of the Women's Reindeer Herding Network, Karen Anna Buljo was also present.

В сборную Тазовского района, сформированную для участия в Открытых традиционных соревнованиях оленеводов на Кубок губернатора Ямала, вошла одна девушка.
Соревнования на Кубок губернатора Ямала включают в себя состязания в национальных видах спорта: прыжки через нарты, перетягивание палки, национальная борьба, гиревой спорт, метание тынзяна на хорей и так далее. В команде Тазовского района десять человек - победители и призеры районных соревнований прошлого года. Единственная девушка будет соревноваться в гонках на оленьих упряжках. В прошлом году она уже занимала первое место в этом виде программы. Отметим, обычно женщины участвуют в конкурсах, призванных показать мастерство шитья, создания национальной одежды, приготовления пищи.
В рамках соревнований пройдет окружной конкурс «Кочевая семья». Команду Тазовского района представит семья из трех человек.
Соревнования на Кубок губернатора Ямала пройдут в Надыме шестого-седьмого марта.
