The reindeer herder vulnerability network study EALAT, based in Kautokeino, Norway has appointed a Project Coordinator. The reindeerblog has a story about PCB's and dioxins in reindeer meat in East Finnmark and how the upturn in mining and energy stocks has led to pressure on reindeer husbandry in Sweden.
A visit to Kautokeino by a delegation from Sakha (Yakutia) included the Mayor of Topolini with whom an EALAT Outreach workshop was planned and agreed upon for April 8th, 2008. Topolini is a small community in Sakha, ca. 400 kms NE as the crow flies from Yakutsk, only accessed by winter road or helicopter, and is a community of around 800 people, the majority of whom are Even. Language issues are prevalent to community leaders, and reindeer husbandry is an important livelihood with approximately 180 people engaged in 'tundra' reindeer husbandry.
