wrh-congress150pxThe second day of the Word Reindeer Herders Congress was a blaze of activities and launches. This was the professional day of the Congress and this was where herders, scientists and others could discuss the themes of the day, namely resilience and adaptation, loss of grazing lands, rights and education.

. The first series of presentations were kicked off by EALAT Phd student Ellen Inga Turi who defined what might resilience might mean when looking at reindeer husbandry. Other presentations were made by other young EALAT researchers including Anna Degteva, Ellen Anna Sara and Ravdna Biret Marie Eira.

These early sessions were followed by the launch of the Barents 2030 report, a production of the International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry which was officially launched today (and is available for download here). The second major launch of the day was a signing agreement on the establishment of a UArctic thematic network institute for circumpolar reindeer husbandry which was signed by WRH President Dmitry Khorolia, Rector Stein Pedersen of the Sami University College, which followed presentations by UArctic President Kars Kullerud and Outi Snellman.

The lead author of the report - which is a future scenario based report on the effect of future oil and gas development on reindeer husbandry in the Barents region - Ingunn Ims Vistnes of NORUT presented the report and its finding and recommendations. This was followed by a panel discussion - reindeer herders and leaders from the Yamal Nenets Autonomous Okrug (Leonid Khudi), the Nenets Autononous Okrug (Vlad Peskov), the Swedish side of Sapmi (Per Gustav Idivuoma), the Norwegian side (Nils Henrik Sara, Anders Oskal), the Finnish side (Juha Magga) and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) Mikhail Pogodaev. Panel responses were followed by discussion and questions from the floor

After lunch a wide range of presentations were made covering indigenous peoples rights (featuring the eminent former chief justice of the Supreme Court of Norway, Carsten Smith. Education issues rounded up the days presentations from Sakha (Yakutia) and the Sami area on education for reindeer herders who migrate and flexible models of learning for herders.
