img_2412_150pxA significant event during the IV World Reindeer Herders Congress in Kautokeino, Norway, last week was the release of a report entitled 'Reindeer Husbandry and Barents 2030 - Impacts of Future Petroleum Development on Reindeer Husbandry in the Barents Region'. The release attracted media attention and was linked to a panel discussion during the scientific day of the WRH Congress.

The report, authored by Ingunn Ims Vistnes, Philip Burgess, Svein D. Mathiesen, Christian Nelleman, Anders Oskal and Johan Mathis Turi was prepared for StatoilHydro by the International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry, in partnership with NORUT, UNEP-GRID Arendal and others and is linked to the framework of the International Polar Year as part of the EALÁT consortium.

The future for reindeer husbandry in the barents region is highly dependent on the availability of grazing land. Extensive oil and gas development will likely lead to loss of vital pastures, in particular coastal summer pastures and calving grounds. Reindeer husbandry and Barents 2030 presents new potential scenarios for reindeer husbandry, combining the GLOBIO methodology for mapping loss of biodiversity with the extensive oil and gas development pictured in the barlindhaug scenarios.
