Chair of the Association of World Reindeer Herders, Mikhail Pogodaev recently attended the 5th Arctic Leaders Summit hosted by RAIPON, who were also celebrating their 20th anniversary. Major themes of up for discussion at the Summit were Indigenous peoples and industrial development and Indigenous peoples and climate change. Pogodaev made a presentation about reindeer herding and adaptation to climate change and loss of pastures and also spoke about the ongoing progress of the EALÁT project. Pogodaev also met with the renowned Arctic explorer and politician Artur Chilingarov to whom he presented the book 'EALÁT - Reindeer Herders Voice'. Pogodaev also took the opportunity to meet with several other key figures at the Summit, including the director of "Rosgidromet" the Main Geophysical Observatory located in St Petersburg, and Alexey Shmakin from Institute of Geography of Russian Academy of Sciences who made a presentation about climate change in the Russian Arctic. The Summit included a large number of people from reindeer herding regions of Russia with whom Pogodaev was able to connect with, including the new leader of YASAVEY, the indigenous peoples organisation of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
