Chair of the Association of World Reindeer Herders has wrapped up several days in New York attending the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in New York. Pogodaev worked closely with Forum member Lars Anders Baer who presented to the Forum a 'Study on the impact of climate change adaptation mitigation measures on reindeer herding'. (Download here from the Archive) Pogodaev read a prepared statement to the Forum in which he thanked Lars Anders Baer for his work in preparing the study and stated that loss of pastures for reindeer is an emergency issue for reindeer herders across Eurasia, Reindeer peoples’ respond to changes in the environment has traditionally relied on flexible operating practices that are now hampered because of several non-climatic factors such as permanent loss of grazing land due to economical development. So for today permanent loss of pastures is a most important and emergency issue for reindeer herders.
