Chair of the Association of World Reindeer Herders, Mikhail Pogodaev is in New York this week attending the 9th UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues which is held annually at the UN building in New York. This week there will be a special session on reindeer husbandry (Items 3 and 7 of the provisional agenda), by Special Rapporteur Lars Anders Baer leading a discussion on the special theme for the year: “Indigenous peoples: development with culture and identity: articles 3 and 32 of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples” in which a Study on the impact of climate change adaptation mitigation measures on reindeer herding will be submitted by the Special Rapporteur. Pogodaev presents to the Forum on Tuesday April 27. At its eighth session, in May 2009, the Permanent Forum appointed Lars-Anders Baer, member of the Permanent Forum, as Special Rapporteur to prepare a study on the impact of climate change adaptation and mitigation measures on reindeer herding and requested that the report be submitted to the Permanent Forum at its ninth session, in April 2010. The present report is a synthesis of a more extended paper and you can read it here or download it from the Reindeer Portal archive here. This is the second time that Pogodaev has attended this meeting. You can read an interview with him about the experience in 2008 here on the Reindeer Portal and you can see photographs of the event here. Related Articles/Posts Pogodaev, UN PFII, WRH |
