On March 24th, a unique educational institute will be created - the UArctic EALÁT Institute which will be centred in Kautokeino and established as a legacy of the International Polar Year (IPY), to maintain networks established in the circumpolar north during IPY and to increase the cooperation related to information exchange, research and education in circumpolar reindeer husbandry in Eurasia. This institute is an outgrowth of the IPY EALAT research project. The official opening will be performed by HSH Prince Albert of Monaco and the event will be followed by an Arctic 'Lavvu' dialogue which will bring together reindeer herders, youth, scientists and researchers in a kick off event for this newly established institute. In tandem with the official opening of the institute, there a Masters/ Phd course will be offered by the UArctic Thematic Network on Global Change in the Arctic on different aspects of using traditional knowledge in the rapid changing Arctic societies. This workshop will incorporate a Sami Parliament Seminar on Traditional Knowledge, Indigenous Traditional Knowledge and Academic Knowledge Building and a Knowledge and Ethics seminar organised by the UArctic EALÁT Institute. Participants include Douglas Nakashima of UNESCO, the Sami Parliament of Norway, Mattias Ahren of the Uni of Tromso, Dr. Robert Corell, the Saami Council and many researchers from the Sami University College and other indigenous educational institutions from Canada and Russia.
