Johan Mathis Turi and Elna Sara of the Association of World Reindeer Herders have this week left for China to visit reindeer herders. China is not often thought of when it comes to reindeer husbandry, but Evenki are spread over huge distances of present day Russia, China and Mongolia. Turi and Sara will be visiting the Aoluguya reindeer herder and minority culture festival. in a unique opportunity for the Association of World Reindeer Herders to connect with reindeer herders in China.
The visit will include a research seminar, a reindeer herders festical and meetings with scientists and administrators in the region. The community of reindeer herders of Aoluguya (in the North East of China close to the Russian and Mongolian border) were recently relocated by the authorities, and there are attempts to create a reindeer herders village, a venture in part organised by the Finnish Poyry consulting company who visited Kautokeino ealier this year.
