A Centre for Reindeer Husbandry has been proposed by Igor Fedorov, the Governor of the Nenets Autonomus Okrug subsequent to an EALAT Information seminar and tundra workshop that was held in Naryan-Mar last week. Such a center, according to Fedorov, would be very useful as reindeer were severely impacted in the 1990's and the loss of livestock has not yet been restored. The Governor went on to state in the news release that Reindeer enterprises are major employers for residents of the rural villages and provide employment for more than 12 per cent of people working in the district, half of whom are indigenous people. The EALAT Information workshop participants welcomed this message and it was decided that this new centre be established in close cooperation with the International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry.
