The Norwegian Minister for Environment and International Development, Erik Solheim was touring Northern Norway this week. His visit was designed to have a focus on climate change and among the people he met with was Anders Oskal, Director of the International Center for Reindeer Husbandry in the coastal Sami area of Varangerbotn in an event organised by the Norwegian Sami Parliament.
Oskal presented the IPY EALÁT project to the Minister and outlined the history of the circumpolar cooperation of reindeer herders and discussions were held on the consequences of climate change for reindeer herding in the Sami area and elsewhere. Oskal also took the opportunity to present the Minister with the EALÁT book (traditional knowledge, climate change and loss of pastures), and the Association of World Reindeer Herders 'Kautokeino Declaration', which was passed in April, 2009.
