nor_2010The 16th Nordic Conference on Reindeer and Reindeer Husbandry Research organised by the Nordic Council for Reindeer Husbandry Research and the Centre for Sami Studies - University of Tromsø, gets underway today in Tromsø. Today's sessions includes headings of 'Historical Issues' and 'Reindeer Husbandry and Development'. Interestingly, in the afternoon session, the voice of reindeer herders themselves from around the Nordic region will get an airing, Alf Johansen from Norway, Per Gustav Idivuoma from Sweden and Juha Magga from Finland - all Sami herders who have quite different experiences to bring to the audience, though are are practicing reindeer husbandry in regions that are facing loss of pastures and climate change to varying degrees.

EALAT project leader Ole Henrik Magga will also be presenting at the close of this session. The conference continues tomorrow, covering legal topics, issues surrounding adaptation and animal health.
