At the recent meeting of the Senior Arctic Officials (SAO) of the Arctic Council in the town of Svolvaer, on the Lofoten Islands, it was decided that the next SAO meeting will be hosted by Kautokeino / Guovdageaidnu, in the heart of the Sami region and in the largest area of reindeer husbandry in Northern Europe.
Scheduled for November 16-18, the meeting will be a great opportunity for Guovdageaidnu / Kautokeino to highlight Sami language and culture and the social, economic and political advances made in the region in recent years. The Association of World Reindeer Herders is an Observer to the Arctic Council and Guovdageaidnu / Kautokeino is home to the Secretary-General, Johan Mathis Turi and also the International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry.
