Hao Shiyuan of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Hosted by ICR

As part of discussions with the International Peace Research Institute of Oslo, under a planned project coordinated by Åshild Kolås, Hao Shiyuan of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was hosted by Anders Oskal and Elna Sara of ICR, October 19-22. The fall slaughter in Oskal's home reindeer husbandry district in Troms was visited and they also took time to visit the Sami school in Bardufoss. Hao Shiyuan was accompanied by a Tibetan student at the University of Oslo, Tashi Nyima, who acted as translator.

YASAVEY Visit ICR, Kautokeino

Yasavey, the indigenous peoples’ association of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug (NAO, Northwestern Russia) were in Finnmark recently, visiting Kautokeino, Karasjok and Tromso and had meeting with Anders Oskal, the ICR director, to discuss future cooperation.

 

 
Minister of Education from Sakha (Yakutia) Visits Kautokeino

Feodosia V. Gabysheva, the Minister of Education from Sakha (Yakutia) visited Kautokeino last week taking in a meeting with the Ministry of Education and Labour and Social Inclusion in Oslo, a tour of the Stortinget, the Sami school in Bardufoss, the Sami University College and meeting with the Mayor of Kautokeino, the International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry and the Assn. of World Reindeer Herders.

 

 
EALAT Yar Sale Seminar and Workshop - Stories, Pictures, Presentations

While EALAT is an IPY project, it also falls under the Arctic Council, and has been approved by the Arctic Council Sustainable Development Working Group. Under the title ‘EALAT Information’, is the project Reindeer Herding, traditional knowledge and adaptation to climate change and loss of grazing land. EALAT Information is not a research project; rather it is a process that aims to bring the voice of reindeer herders to the Arctic Council on climate change issues and related challenges.
