A significant event during the IV World Reindeer Herders Congress in Kautokeino, Norway, last week was the release of a report entitled 'Reindeer Husbandry and Barents 2030 - Impacts of Future Petroleum Development on Reindeer Husbandry in the Barents Region'. The release attracted media attention and was linked to a panel discussion during the scientific day of the WRH Congress.

The Norwegian Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs was the keynote speaker to the opening of the IV World Reindeer Herders Congress in Kautokeino March 30, 2009. Walaas brought greetings from the Norwegian Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Norwegian government and singled out Kautokeino for being 'the most important centres for traditional and modern reindeer husbandry in the world'
The speech was significant in that it praised and recognised the long term work of the Association of World Reindeer Herders and the importance and significance of traditional knowledge and the role that reindeer husbandry plays in the North. She also noted the challenges of climate change, the importance of developing markets for reindeer meat and the role of the Arctic Council.

University of the Arctic Insitute for Circumpolar Reindeer Husbandry Established |

During last weeks IV World Reindeer Herders Congress, the Association of World Reindeer Herders, the International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry and the Sami University College signed a letter of intent on the establishment of an Institute for Circumpolar Reindeer Husbandry in the University of the Arctic system.
According to the document, the primary goal behind the Institute is to create an IPY legacy and to ensure the continuation of the EALAT network, the IPY research project of the same name. This letter of intent has been forwarded to the Board of the University of the Arctic for their approval.

 The 4th World Reindeer Herders Congress wrapped up on Friday April 4th with the delegates from Russia leaving the Thon hotel early Saturday morning at the start of which for many is a long trip home. Vassily Serotteto, a Nenets herder from the Yamal peninsula described the journey, "First we drive to Murmansk, theny we fly to Moscow the next day. After that there is a flight to Salekhard and then Nyadma (Khudi, another Nenets herders) and I will find a helictopter that will take us back to our reindeer and families. It will take about 3-4 days."

 Today was the third day of the World Reindeer Herders Congress and this marked the day when delegates moved outside. After a short tour of the Kautokeino slaughterhouse, congress buses drove north towards the small village of Lahpoluobbal, a tiny Sámi reindeer herding village in the high plateau of the Finnmark vidda. The village is in the midst of the winter pastures of the head of the Norwegian Sami Reindeer Herders Association, Nils Henrik Sara, who greeted the delegates with a welcome to his siida where they had set up several lavvut (Sámi traditional tents) and served reindeer meat.
