 The Board of the International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry held their first Board meeting of 2009 in Kautokeino. Present were Johan Mathis Turi (Chair), ICR Director Anders Oskal, ICR employee Elna Sara. All board members were present - Berit Marie Jonsson (Sweden), Dr. Monica A. Sundset (Uni of Tromso, Norway), Juha Magga (Finland), Mai Britt Utsi (Norway) and Vladimir Etylin (Russia).

 On the eve of Sami National Day (Feb 6) the Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon Magnus and Crown Princess left Kautokeino yesterday after an eventful visit that included an introduction to reindeer husbandry by ICR Director Anders Oskal and Association of World Reindeer Herders General Secretary Johan Mathis Turi in a lavvu with a slideslow through the smoke and fire. Oskal and Turi presented the royals with a Nenets lassoo made of reindeer leather and silver reindeer lassoo rings. This was followed by a visit to the winter pastures of Ardni siida, where they were hosted by Karen Anne Logje Gaup, who has hosted visiting royals in the late 1960's. En route to Badasjohka, the visiting royals were treated to an open air EALAT workshop by project leaders Ole Henrik Magga and Svein Mathiesen.Inger Marie Eira Gaup and one of her elder informants Isak Mathis gave a visual demonstration of the importance of snow, climate variability and temperature to reindeer husbandry.

ICR to Present International Reindeer Husbandry to the Crown Prince of Norway |

 The Crown Prince of Norway, Haakon Magnus and the Crown Princess Mette Marit are making an official visit to the Sami area this week, to conincide with the celebratation of Sami National Day (Feb 6). On February 5, in an event organised and coordinated by the International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry, the Crown Prince and Crown Princess will be hosted in a lavvu and informed by ICR Director Anders Oskal about the 20 year development of international cooperation in reindeer husbadnry around the circumpolar world. They will then be taken to visit the Ardni-siida reindeer herd, where they will hosted by Karen Anna Logje Gaup. En route, EALAT project leader Svein Mathiesen, and EALAT Phd students and elders will demonstrate to the visitors the story and importance of snow to reindeer husbandry, in a changing climate, a theme which the Norwegian royals have been highly engaged with.

NOR Conference Wraps up in Luleå, Sweden |

 Over 100 reindeer researchers, managers, administrators and some politicians converged on the town of Lulea, in the county of Norrbotten, Sweden this week. The occasion was the 15th
Nordic conference on reindeer and reindeer husbandry research, organised by NOR, the Nordic Council for Reindeer Husbandry Research. The title of the conference was Renskotseln och omvarlden - Reindeer Husbandry and the Surrounding World.
There were participants from Sweden, Norway, Finland, the USA and New Zealand with a wide variety of research institutions represented and the conference ran from January 26-29. Themes of the conference included climate change, infrastructural disturbance and habitat loss, Predation and conflicts in reindeer husbandry. There were also speed talks, poster sessions and a series of specialised workshops.
